William Gay was born ca. 1797 possibly in North Carolina, Virginia or Ohio. He married Betsey Spencer in 1821 in Johnston, North Carolina. They had eight known children. He married Sarah H Wall, daughter of Bennet Wall and Sarah Murphy, in 1859. They had five known children. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in North Carolina.
